On November 20, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Kansas City hosted this year’s Transgender Day of Remembrance Mass for The Diocese of West Missouri. Members of the community gathered in prayer and remembrance as they lifted up the names of those whose lives were taken by violence. The service offered a place to honor their memory and acknowledge the ongoing challenges faced by transgender people across the country.

“It’s important because these are real people’s lives. People that should still be with us,” says Raja Reed, parish administrator for St. Mary’s. ““Naming their stories helps us stay aware of the injustice and violence that transgender individuals face every day. It reminds us to keep asking how we can do better.”

Through this observance, St. Mary’s hopes to bring more awareness, compassion, and understanding across the wider community. The parish envisions continued ministry—including education, pastoral support, and partnerships with local organizations.

“At St. Mary’s, we’re guided by the belief that every person is a beloved child of God. Recognizing this day is a small but meaningful way to say, ‘You matter. Your life is sacred. And we’re paying attention.’”
