Whether your parish is just getting started with electronic giving or already has a program in place, the following information offers guidance for those exploring the option for the first time as well as helpful reminders for those looking to make the most of what they already have.
If your parish doesn’t yet have an electronic giving program in place, here are some reasons to consider one:
- Increased security – eliminates concerns about the safety of checks received
- Convenience for donors and staff alike
- Appeals to younger generations who prefer digital transactions
- Environmentally friendly – less paper, less waste
- Simplified bookkeeping
- Stabilized cash flow
- Increased revenue – recurring giving tends to grow overall donations
- Supports a First Fruits giving mindset
Getting Started
Many companies provide electronic giving services for churches. The Diocese of West Missouri also offers access to PayPal at no cost to the parish. To explore this option, please contact Zach Phillips, communications@diowestmo.org, (816) 683-9177. Another platform to consider is Tithe.ly (discount available for TENS members).
Honoring the Offertory Tradition
Many parishioners are accustomed to placing a gift in the offering plate each week. Consider providing an electronic giving card that allows people to participate in the offertory while also serving as an easy way to share sign-up information for online giving. You can download and print an example electronic giving card here.
Confirmation and Communication
Once your electronic giving is in place, be sure to send a confirmation email to each donor that includes basic gift details along with a sincere thank-you.
Ongoing communication is also essential. A brief monthly reminder in your e-newsletter or parish bulletin — covering how to set up electronic giving and who to contact for help — not only reminds people how to give but serves as a gentle nudge to give.
