Every day in the Kansas City metro, immigrant families face the uncertainty of detention, family separation, and the challenges of navigating complex systems with limited support. While policies and headlines often change, the human need for compassion, dignity, and community remains constant.

That is why Abide in Love Kansas City, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, was created.

Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s principles of nonviolent love, Abide in Love accompanies immigrants impacted by detention and family separation through relationships of compassion, practical support, and hope.

Rather than asking, “What can we do from a distance?” we ask, “How can we walk alongside our neighbors?”

Volunteers provide practical assistance in ways that help restore dignity and reduce isolation. This includes assembling care packages for detained immigrants, supporting families experiencing financial hardship because of detention, connecting individuals with community resources, and building relationships with those who often feel forgotten. We also seek to educate our community about the realities facing immigrant families while inviting others into a ministry of accompaniment and love.

As Episcopalians, we promise in our Baptismal Covenant to seek and serve Christ in all persons and to strive for justice and peace while respecting the dignity of every human being. Abide in Love Kansas City offers one tangible way to live into those promises in the Kansas City metro area. There also is an Abide in Love affiliate in Springfield, Missouri, which serves Greene County.
