Juneteenth Celebration

On Saturday, June 20, people from across The Diocese of West Missouri gathered at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral to celebrate Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and honors the contributions of African Americans. The celebration brought together members of the diocesan community for a day of fellowship, learning, food, music, and games.

For Canon Shirley Bolden, Juneteenth means more than just a single celebration.

“Juneteenth is a meaningful reminder that our country is shaped by many different people,” she said. “It calls us to honor one another’s traditions, stories, accomplishments, and to recognize that we are stronger when we learn from each other.”

Throughout the day, everyone got to participate in several activities. These included games like bingo and cornhole, karaoke, and even line dancing.

“What stood out to me most was the sense of fellowship,” she said. “It was wonderful to see everyone taking part in the trivia games, a tradition started on all our bus trips by Mrs. Sara Frazier, and to watch the children laughing and enjoying the games and bubble machine outside in the courtyard.”

Beyond the festivities, those gathered got to take a moment to reflect on the significance of Juneteenth and pray for victims of racial prejudice and violence.

“I hope people leave with a deeper understanding of why Juneteenth matters. Not only as a celebration, but also as an opportunity to reflect on the truth of our country’s history and the experiences of those who were treated unjustly,” she said.

Thank you to everyone who joined in this year’s Juneteenth celebration. We hope that this day continues to inspire our parishes and communities in the months and years ahead.
