Dear Friends in Christ,
I write to you with news about St. Paul’s in Maryville.
As you know, St. Paul’s was closed before I arrived as your Bishop Provisional. My initial thought was to try to reopen it. To that end, I invited a group from around the diocese, the Rev. Collin Larimore, the Rev. Cn. John Spicer, the Rev. Cn. Robin James, the Rev. Chas Marks, the Rev. Joe Pierjok, the Rev. Stan Runnels, the Rev. Galen Snodgrass, the Rev. Sid Breese, the Rev. Isaac Petty, and Treasurer Tom Kokjer, to look at possibilities for re-opening St. Paul’s. (It should be noted that this would have been the second time that St. Paul’s would have been reopened – it had closed and was reopened once before.) This group worked for many months to look at opportunities to restart St. Paul’s, examining everything from creation care, to linking with the University, to creating an intentional residential community there.
After much discussion, the Maryville Committee asked the Property Committee to weigh in on the repairs needed to return the church building and rectory to working order. A team from the Property Committee, including Canon David Powell (chair), the Rev. Galen Snodgrass, Tom Kokjer, and Phillip Lofflin went to Maryville to inspect the property, where they were met by Fr. Sid Breese and Channing Horner. The Property Committee determined that the improvements necessary to bring the church building and rectory back to workable and livable condition would be too cost-prohibitive – and would need to be done before any money could be put into starting a new congregation there. Therefore, working with the Maryville Committee and the Property Committee, the Standing Committee and I have agreed that the best course of action is to sell the Maryville property. The Diocesan Council will be tasked with the final decision as to the use of the funds after the sale of the property.
I want to thank Channing and Louise Horner for their faithfulness and dedication in looking after the property all these years. There will be a service to honor the ministry done in the name of Jesus Christ there, with a diocesan celebration for all who can gather.
Your Standing Committee and Diocesan Council met in retreat in early February to talk about ways we can work with congregations to assist in their continued presence throughout West Missouri. Some of our new budget categories were created to address needs in our congregations: the Centralized and Property Grants Committees, the Ministry Developers and the Curacy Program. We are still in the process of formulating the grant processes and hope to have an official announcement about their opening soon.
