A dedicated group of five women met on May 16th for a day of Godly Play exploration with certified trainer, Barbara McCall. Participants were introduced to the theology and methods of Godly Play and assisted in organizing the Godly Play classroom at Calvary. The mission of Godly Play is “Making meaning through story, wonder, and play. Nurturing spiritual lives by honoring the centrality, competency, and capacity of children.”

Calvary has an extensive collection of Godly Play materials thanks to the generosity of two Diocese of West Missouri congregations. About twenty years ago, Christ Episcopal Church in Springfield offered the collection of storytelling kits to All Saints Church in West Plains where they were used for Sunday School and VBS for over a decade. When the items were no longer in active use, the vestry of All Saints offered the collection to the people of Calvary where the newly called rector, Canon Anne Kyle, was trying to put together a Godly Play program. Calvary used the collection for Sunday school and VBS for a number of years and is now refreshing the program with four new storytellers.

Interested in becoming a Godly Play storyteller? St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church, Overland Park, Kansas will host a training later this summer in July. For more information about Godly Play visit https://www.godlyplayfoundation.org.
