As you know, Continuing Education (CE) is a vital part of vocational and spiritual development. Canon 9, Sec. 1 and Canon 7, Sec. 5 of The Episcopal Church state that all clergy who are actively involved in ministry are expected to engage in ongoing professional and spiritual development activities to maintain good standing within the diocese and effectiveness in ministry. This requirement also applies to clergy who are retired but continue to serve in a congregation or parish. That is why I am working with the Commission on Ministry (COM) to establish clear guidelines for clergy in their ongoing CE.

There are many wonderful Continuing Education opportunities that focus on vocational development and support current and future ministries. Clergy are encouraged to explore a variety of learning modes, including classes, conferences, online platforms, and more. Enrollment in accredited academic programs also fulfills continuing education requirements. As such, parochial clergy should have time and funding provided by the parish or mission they serve to attend CE. If needed, the diocese provides a “3 for $350 Grant” to help offset costs for attended programs. Please keep in mind that this grant may not cover all expenses, especially if you are traveling. After completing your CE, please fill out the Continuing Education Completion Report Form to record the development activity in your file. If you need assistance with the form, or with securing additional funding, please contact the Rev. Canon Anne Kyle or me.

I have asked Canon Anne and the Commission on Ministry to review our clergy Continuing Education resources. To support this work, a Continuing Education Work Group has been formed and is preparing a proposal for the future of CE in the diocese. Their focus includes requirements, reporting, and record-keeping. I have also asked the COM to include a review of the 3 for $350 grants in their proposal. If you’d like to know more about this effort, please reach out to Canon Anne.

On top of these efforts, we are also compiling a list of CE opportunities to share with clergy across the diocese. If you would like help exploring options, please reach out to the Rev. Canon Chas Marks or to me directly.

Continuing Education is an essential piece of our well-being and formation as leaders in the diocese. I expect each of you to maintain a practice of study and learning throughout your ministry. Please let me, or any of our diocesan staff, know how we can support you in this practice. We are here for you!

Peace be with you,
