Honoring Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom and Reflection
On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received the long-awaited news that they were free.
Juneteenth, short for June Nineteenth, honors that historic moment and calls us to remember that the journey toward justice, dignity, and equality continues.
Now recognized as a federal holiday, Juneteenth is both a joyful celebration of freedom and a powerful moment of reflection. It invites us to honor Black history, culture, and resilience while recommitting ourselves to the work of building a more just, compassionate, and inclusive society.
In honoring this moment in history, The Diocese of West Missouri invites you to a Juneteenth celebration: Remembering the Past, Shaping the Future, on Saturday, June 20 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral. Come and learn about the history and significance of Juneteenth through fun activities including:
- Get-Acquainted Bingo
- Reconciliation Tribute & Liturgy
- Meal Served (Table Trivia)
- Line Dancing
- Trivia Door Prizes
- Motown Karaoke / Sing-along
- Games (Indoor / Outdoor)
RSVP by Monday, June 15. There is no cost to attend. We look forward to celebrating with you this Juneteenth! Feel free to download the flyer and share with your friends.
